Install Win XP on Toshiba Qosmio x505 (part 2)

How to install Windows XP on Toshiba Qosmio x505 laptops (part 2)
Installing the Conexant chipset sound driver

(Part 1 is here)

The second stage in installing the Windows XP on Toshiba Qosmio x505 laptops is the dreadful Conexant sound driver. I have modified an existing driver to make it work .

Here I have uploaded a modified driver that will work with Windows XP 32 bit. So, YES FINALLY THIS IS THE DRIVER THAT TOSHIBA AND CONEXANT REFUSES TO GIVE YOU! YOUR SOUND PROBLEM IS SOLVED NOW!

Just download the archive and unpack it (you may need WinRar for this). You will find three folders numbered 1,2,3. The numbers correspond with the steps you have to perform (see below).

Enter folder 1.
Run "Microsoft UAA Bus driver for High Definition Audio\ASetup.exe"
Run "Microsoft UAA Bus driver for High Definition Audio\us\Install.bat"
This will restart your Windows without any questions. So, be prepared (save your work).

Enter folder 2.
If Windows ask for drivers go directly to step 3. If not, run this file:
Run "Restart UAA using DevCon\Restart_UAA.bat"

Enter folder 3.
When Windows ask for drivers for your Conexant audio chip, point it to the "High Definition Audio Device\XP32\" folder.

That's all. If Windows recognizes the driver it will let you know. The SmartAudio utility is FULLY functional also!! The audio chipset will be listed as Connexant Pebble High Definition SmartAudio. Enjoy and don't forget to leave feedback!
Don't forget to send a "Fuck You" letter to Toshiba for its great nonexistent customer support and for locking its laptops on Windows 7 64 bits (poor Linux bastards, I pity you also :) ).

_________
Edit:
If the process is not successful please leave a message. You may need to change a line in the above script. I will provide guidance.
I will try to upload a newer driver soon and to create a software tool that will automate the process for you and to make the driver compatible with ALL possible laptops (not only Toshiba) that have a Conexant audio chip.

  2. I strongly recommend against Windows XP on 64 bits. It has NO advantage over Win XP 32 bit unless you have more than 3.2GB of RAM.
If you have 4GB of RAM, Win XP 64 bits will give you back those 0.8GB of RAM that Win XP 32 bit cannot access, but at the same time you will instantly lose that amount because (I suppose you already know that) programs on 64 bits requires much more memory than programs on 32 bits. This is because

now the program requires 8 bytes (64 bits) to store its internal data, instead of 4 bytes (32 bits), which is double amount of RAM!

So, you gain nothing unless you have way over 4GB or RAM (for example 6 or 8GB). Even worst, Win XP 64 bits has massive compatibility problems!! If you MUST use an 64 bit OS, then upgrade directly to Windows 7.

  3. This process fails at the first step, ASetup.exe which kicks off a Found New Hardware Wizard. It does not see drivers in any folder other than Folder3/XP32 but that fails because the Wizard still cannot find the "necessary software."

  4. Tried this thirty different ways and it's still not working. I have four non-working devices listed under "HDAUDIO" with
    \FUN_01&VEN_10DE&DEV_000D&SUBSYS_10DE0101&REV1001\

I am forced to use XP for proprietary software that simply will not work in Win7x64's XP mode or in the XP virtual machine. I really hate Microsoft for all the underhanded crappery trying to force people off XP and they've really put huge pressure on manufacturers like Toshiba. (At least Win7 is not quite the crippled rubbish and red-faced embarrassment that Vista was.)

If modern Cubans can keep their 1955 Chevys going then I'm using that as model and sticking with XP for as long as I can.

I appreciate your efforts. (That was also my post yesterday under "Anonymous.")

  5. Try this:

    1. Complicated way: In the "Microsoft UAA Bus driver for High Definition Audio" package search for the INF file and see if it needs to be updated to match your hardware ID. There is a known problem with the ID of the audio card: it should be the same for all users but it isn't. You are unlucky. It needs quite a bit of knowledge but it will work 100%.

    2. Lucky shot: Toshiba released recently a BIOS patch in which they fix the audio ID problem. Hope that the BIOS patch fixed your ID. Try again to install the driver after installing the update.

    3. Maybe the driver is not good for you. I did it for my laptop x505 860. It should work with ALL Toshiba laptop that has this audio chip, but who knows...

  6. Will try the BIOS patch first. Maybe I'll get lucky. In any case, your efforts are much appreciated.

  7. > they've really put huge pressure on manufacturers like Toshiba

Not quite. Toshiba is as crappy as Microsoft. It is so easy to fix the 32 bit sound driver (note: it seems to be actually a BIOS issue) and give it to the people. I did it few days after I purchased the laptop and I am not an expert. Toshiba should have better engineers than me! I think they just don't care!

  8. I've set this machine up to dual boot. Win7 remains on HDD1 (SSHD) and WinXP is in Partition1 on the 500GB HDD2 (that was quite a trick in itself using linux fdisk in expert mode). Now I simply choose which drive to boot from via the F12 boot selector. (Simple is good and this works very well.)

I went into Win7 to look at the HDAudio devices.: I have 1 "Conexant Pebble High Definition SmartAudio" device and 4 each "NVIDIA High Definition Audio" Devices. Those are the ones that are showing up as having a problem. I'm not clear on why I have five different hardware devices for HDAudio.

In WinXP it reports that the Conexant driver is working properly, but I still get no sound.
Turns out your solution does seem to work for the Conexant driver but I also had to install the drivers for NVIDIA HD Audio. I think this might have been part of the download I did for the display adapter, but it shows up in C:\NVIDIA\HDAudioWHQLDriver\1.0.9.1\International\HDAudio\

Once I pointed the Wizard to that folder, the drivers were finally installed and I have sound.

It still does not work automatically without having the Restart_UAA.bat in the "STARTUP" folder, but I can live with that.

  9. Guru,

I must admit you're likely correct with respect (or lack thereof) to Toshiba. However, my last four laptops have been Toshiba, three still in service thought the oldest is on its last legs and is only running Ubuntu. The X505 is great hardware platform for the $ and we buy them IN SPITE of the embarrassingly bad customer support. I've learned over the years to image my hard drives monthly as backups because these retards won't give us a Windows disk with which to do a repair installation which Windows will need from time to time. It would cost them what, like 25 cents per machine?

Microsoft is still such an shitty operation that Toshiba, even with their shortcomings, to me looks reasonably good in comparison.

  10. > It still does not work automatically without having the Restart_UAA.bat in the "STARTUP" folder, but I can live with that.

I am glad it works. Probably that nVidia kit installed something that was needed in your system (but not the audio driver). I my computer I also fixed the "Restart_UAA.bat" problem so I don't have to run that script anymore. Unfortunately, I don't remember how. I think it was a bug in Windows High Definition sound engine. We will have to wait until I need to reinstall my Windows, to do it again. I should have bloged it while it was fresh in my memory.

  11. Hi.
    Thank's for your good job.
But I have to put the Restart_UAA.bat in the "STARTUP" folder.
After each restart, "Conexant Pebble High Definition SmartAudio" disappears.
    If you remember !

  12. Thank you for this sweet bit of hackishness. It didnt go quite as described (no sudden restart after step 1 so I just skipped to step 3). But it absolutely worked... somehow. And I'm too sleep deprived and burnt out right now to even follow directions so that's pretty amazing. F*** Windows 7. Thank you Guru.

  13. Well, you should not blame Windows 7 but Toshiba. They are responsible to provide the drivers.
