Google Drive still unreliable (How to fix 'Primary key must be unique' error)

I hate Google Drive. It is haunted by too many bugs.

Recently my GDrive application started showing a "primary key must be unique" error message, asking me to disconnect the drive and start all over again. I did that. Took few hours to resynchronize it all. But the next day I got the same error and asked me again to repeat the operation. I have been poking the forums (including Google's forum) up and down for months and found no real solution. So I had to do the job on my own. This is how to fix the "primary key must be unique" error:

  1. Start Google Drive
  2. Hold the SHIFT key pressed while clicking the Google Drive systray icon. This will show the 'Enable diagnostic mode' special menu.
  3. Click 'Enable diagnostic mode' menu.
  4. Wait until Google Drive crashes and shows the "primary key must be unique"error message. Let the application shutdown.
  5. Go to "c:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\AppData\Local\Google\Drive" folder and open "sync_log.log".
Note: Replace 'YOUR_USER_NAME' with your Windows account name (the account in which you are logged in). You can see this name when you press the 'Start' button.
  6. Look up this text: "Detected conflict while trying to download file to".
  7. After 'to' follows the name of the file that generated the conflict. Locate that file and delete it or (better) rename it. Do this for all conflicted files (if there are more than one).
  8. Restart Google Drive.
    That's it.
This technique can be used to debug other Google Drive errors also.

Update 1 - How to do it on Mac OS (thanks to Maik):

Thanks, this fix also works for Apple Mac OS-X.
To get to the log file:
- in finder click the Go menu
- with the menu open click ALT-key so the hidden Library item appears
- open the Library and go to folder Google -> Drive

Update 2 - More GDrive bugs: The trash cannot be purged

Now my Google Drive account shows that is 95% full even if I don't have many files loaded in GDrive (I have a total of 1.1GB). After investigation I have discovered that are files locked in the 'Trash' that cannot be deleted. I contacted Google Drive support and they said they will fix my account. The provided additional Google Drive space so I can keep using my GDrive until they will fix the problem. That was in February 2012. Still no word from them.

Update 3 - How to make GDrive synchronize faster?

With this occasion I want to thanks Google team for the fucking 'good' job they did and to tell them: I don't believe in witches, but they surely exist.

Plimus versus Avangate

I got tired with Plimus and theirs nonexistent support so I decided to look for something better. Here are the results of a short survey of mine (the topics below are the most important for me):

What happens in the case of chargebacks?

If a customer makes a chargeback, Avangate offers the necessary assistance to solve the incident with the issuing bank free of charge.  Avangate will return the perceived commission in all cases except the case where the chargeback is done due to a customer complaint about the purchased product.

What happens if a client returns the products or requests a refund?

In such cases stipulated by law, the client may return the purchased products and solicit the refund. In these situations, Avangate will assure the transaction reversal, returning the money to the customer, retaining only the commission perceived for the initial payment transaction.  All refunds are done only after prior approval from software author.

How do you deal with VAT?

Avangate acts as a reseller for your products. According to EU regulations, independent of seller location, all customers located within the EU are required to pay VAT unless they have a valid VAT ID, in which case they are exempt from VAT. The typical VAT rate is 19%, but this may vary from 15% to 25%, depending on the buyer location and Avangate location. All customers outside the EU are exempt from VAT.

Do you have additional taxes for customers?

No

Do you accept payments in a foreign currency?

Yes. 36 currencies

Pricing

Standard Pack:  4.9% + 1.95 EUR/2.5 USD   or  8% (minimum charge is 1.95 EUR or 2.5 USD)
Business Pack:  Secret/Not disclosed  (it must be bad since they keep it secret)

How do you deal with VAT?

As of July 1st 2003 we collect VAT from EU consumers who do not have a valid VAT ID for electronically delivered products. We collect this VAT and pay it to the authorities; you do not need to do anything special for this to happen.

Do you have additional taxes for customers?

Yes. We have sales taxes for California customers.

What happens in the case of chargebacks?

Plimus deletes the details of the order. The vendor cannot see the name of the customer and has no clue why the charge back appeared or why the bank accepted the charge back.

Plimus fines the vendor with $25 for each chargeback if the charge back ratio is higher than 0.1%!

What happens if a client returns the products or requests a refund?

Plimus lets the vendor deal with the customer. If the vendor does not solve the issue in 2 weeks it takes over and refunds the order "in order to prevent an imminent chargeback".

Do you accept payments in a foreign currency?

Yes. Over 70 currency types.

WireTrasfer fee!!!!!!!!!

The bank on Plimus' side will charge a fee for wire transfer (up to $30) even if the customer is from EU where the wire transfer fee is 0. The fee will be deducted from the amount the customer sent for the product it purchased. This means that when amount arrives to you it will be short with about $30.

4GB of Toshiba bloatware

Toshiba preinstalls a loat of bloatware on Toshiba Qosmio laptops. I decided to tidy up my Toshiba laptop to make it boot faster. Also, after uninstalling all kind of Toshiba garbage, setup files, trial games and other leftovers, and deleting the multi-language files (except English) for all installed software, I decreased the consumed space from about 4.5GB to only 152MB.

The following processes are running by default on all Toshiba Qosmio laptops. You can safely stop them using MSConfig.

SmoothView.exe - TOSHIBA SmoothView Zooming Utility.
Is installed on various Toshiba Laptops and handles zooming and scrolling of the screen to create a larger desktop.

TcrdMain.exe - TOSHIBA FlashCards - 27MB RAM
Without it the Fn key will stop working.

NDStray.exe - 1.2MB RAM
Tray utility for network switching application which permits switching network devices and settings with a click on the tray icon. While it is not required, for people who span multiple networks and want an easy way to go from wired to wireless and change addresses and other network settings, it's a must have.
Assists you managing and configuring your Wifi/Bluetooth Components in your Notebook. Stop it if you don't use your wireless. NDS Tray is combined with the Toshiba Tool Config Free.
Can be stopped? Yes, but the ConfigFree icon will disappear from system tray.

TosNcCore.exe - Message Center - 8.6MB RAM
If you stop it the Toshiba Buletin Board icon will disappear from system tray.
Can be stopped? Yes. Thanks god!

TPwrMain.exe - TOSHIBA Power Saver - 11MB RAM
Can be stopped? Unknown.

tosSENotify.exe - Toshiba HDD/SSD Alert Utility - 9.8MB RAM
It checks S.M.A.R.T status of the HDD.
Can be stopped? Yes, but run it once per week (or more often if your laptop is over 2 years old).

Things to be uninstalled definitively:

Toshiba Bulletin Board - about 150MB
Toshiba Reel Time - about 150MB
Corel DVD MovieFactory - 708MB!
TOSHIBA Games (including "Game Explorer" and "Game Console") - about 40MB
WORKSSETUP folder - 1.1GB (location c:\Program Files (x86)\TOSHIBA\WORKSSETUP\)
Vcredist_x86.exe - This is a Visual C redistribution file. Do a search in your computer and delete it from everywhere.
